  • Brainfreeze Flavors Out now on Magic Sneakers Records, Slurped: Original Brainfreeze Flavors Vol 1. This release-- available on 2 LP or CD, collects 16 of the tracks used on the Brainfreeze release. According to Dave Hayes, this release is available at Aquarius Recordsin San Francisco or Kim's in NYC. Do a search for "Slurped" on the Aquarius page to get both versions. The cover has a parody of the original cover with two robbers (black clothes and black hose on their heads). Get yours before they disappear!

  • A little update... There hasn't been much news lately. But, to answer a popular request... Shadow is feverishly working on the new solo album-- which is still slated for release on MCA in September. The process has him travelling between home and the UK. In recent e-mails, he expresses a real excitement for the project. More news as anything develops.

  • Reebok Ad During Survivor 2 has DJ Shadow Production A couple of weeks ago rumors were floating around on the Internet regarding Reebok's new "Defy Convention" ad campaign and DJ Shadow's possible involvement in it. I have verified that the commercial used during Survivor 2 tonight had DJ Shadow producing a version of "William Tell Overture" for the Spike Jonze-produced commercial spot. The high-energy :60 spot features many images of sports and sports-related events as well as some seemingly non-sports related images. No other information regarding this is available at this time.

  • The Brainfreeze Continues Two years after the original performance and one year after the last, the Brainfreeze legacy continues. Future Primitive is releasing a compilation album called URBAN REVOLUTIONS on February 12th, and it features a "Dance The Slurp" interlude taken from the Last Brainfreeze performance, where actual Slurpees were passed out to the crowd. The album (3LP's or 1 CD) also features new and exclusive tracks from Rob Swift, Z-Trip, DJ Faust & Shortee, and DJ Design among others. Thanks to John Book for the reporting...

  • New Shadow track on Compilation A new track credited to "The Groove Robbers featuring DJ Shadow" called "Flashback" is now available on a a compilation called Turntables By The Bay vol 1" on Hip Hop Slam records. This is a vinyl-only release and is available at Sandbox Automatic. From Josh in an e-mail to me in September of last year, "The "Turntables by the Bay" track is an all-turntables track I did as an experiment a couple of months ago (no sampler was used). I just wanted to see what I could come up with. I had fun making it, and it's pretty unique as far as my body of work."

  • Dance the Slurp-- One More Time! DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist are going to perform a "farewell performance" of Brainfreeze on January 18th at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. "We always intended to do a show in LA, even before I asked [Cut Chemist] to join me on the road in October..." said DJ Shadow in a recent e-mail, "then he got his records stolen. Now that they're back, we're doing this 'farewell performance' in LA. Luke always wanted to do it in his hometown." I don't have any information about ticket prices, yet. If you are in the area, you shouldn't miss this show!

  • DJ Shadow Samples Site Updated with Brainfreeze The DJ Shadow Samples site has been updated to include the Brainfreeze samples. As reported below, Cut Chemist had all his 45s for the Brainfreeze set stolen. It is becoming less and less likely that these records will be recovered. If you would like to help Cut Chemist recover some of his lost records, so that he and DJ Shadow will be able to perform this set live again, e-mail DOP if you come across any of the records on the page that are marked with a red HELP and would like to help out Cut Chemist.

Cut Chemist Gets Brainfreeze source vinyl stolen
From Allstar Daily News,19 October 1999
Another one to add to the rash of equipment being stolen from musicians: Monday (Oct. 18) night during the Philadelphia stop of DJ Shadow's tour, Shadow announced that his opening act, Cut Chemist, would not be able to perform. The reason? All of his albums, including the 45s Cut and Shadow had for the "All 45's Duel" never showed up from the airport. When Chemist's equipment failed to show up in Baltimore, they thought it was just a case of lost luggage, one of the perils of touring coast-to-coast. But during the Philadelphia show at the Theater For The Living Arts, Shadow announced that the records are now presumed stolen. Other musicians with recent theft problems include Sonic Youth, Fear Factory, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Sun Volt.

  • Josh debunks the Tool collaboration rumor: "...the thing about Tool is absolutely fabricated...I've never had contact with them at all. Besides, I'm not doing any outside production again for quite awhile so I can concentrate strictly on starting the next album." Thanks to Josh for the clarification! I will be removing the August 7 Rumor Mill item.

    August 25, 1999
  • Word from the road from Shadow The Real Deal Remix/Lesson 4 Re-Issue is actually a bootleg-- not authorized by Shadow or any label. "Lesson 4 has been bootleged," Shadow said in a call from London yesterday, "I don't particularly mind, but I don't want people to pay $300 for one... it isn't worth it." According to Josh, the original pressing had scratchings in the dead wax in the runout groove that said "Hip hop smoothed out on the hip hop tip with a hip hop appeal to it." This was a dish to Bel Biv Devoe by Josh in 1991. The bootleg just has the catalog number and side. Bigup to Josh for giving the facts on this!

  • Brainfreeze Information I have been hit with many requests for where to get Brainfreeze, what label it is on, etc. Brainfreeze is not distributed by any label. There is no label information on the CD. So far, the only place to get one of these is at live shows of DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist this Fall. I heard from another fan that Cut Chemist is out of CD's right now. If I get any more information about where to get these, I will put it here on the News page.

    August 7, 1999
  • Real Deal Remix/Lesson 4 Re-Issue! For unknown reasons or sources, Lesson 4 on vinyl has reappeared. At any rate, Sandbox Automatic has the goods for $9. Very good deal, indeed. Lesson 4 went for over $300 on eBay earlier this year! The guy at Sandbox I talked to said that they ordered as many as they could. While supplies last. I ordered one- get yours!

  • First Announced US Tour Date DJ Shadow is going to be part of KROQ's upcoming Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It is a two day affair, October 9th and 10th, with many other bands on four stages. Shadow is playing on the 10th on the "Outdoor Theatre" stage along with Jurassic 5. There are other notable acts playing the two-day festival including Money Mark, Art of Noise, the Chemical Brothers, DJ Cam, The Scratch Perverts (!!), Underworld, Carl Craig, Beck, Modest Mouse... the list goes on. Seemingly a not-lame event. Tickets went on sale today-- $50 per day!!

  • Brainfreeze Notes Okay, I got my copy of Brainfreeze. Very good release as you might expect from Shadow and Cut. It is, as described, a non-stop mix of 45's. There are some pretty cool tongue-in-cheek breaks. All good mixes should include a bit of humor. The cover art is 7-11 Slurpee themed, with photos of Shadow and Cut in 7-11 uniforms in a 7-11. The liner notes mention that this is "the best of two takes, chilled to just the right temperature and server full of frosty wholesome goodness just for you..." Okay... There is a section of the mix where they drop in some obscure dance 45 called "The Slurp" complete with straw-sucking sounds. They do a pretty nifty reworking of the Number Song and Organ Donor towards the end of the mix. Be sure and get one of these when Cut or Shadow plays. It is one that everyone should pick up!

  • Endtroducing in Top 90 of the 90's Endtroducing is listed as the #15 album of the 1990's according to Spin Magazine in its September 1999 "Special Collectors' Issue."

    August 1, 1999
  • DJ Shadow Chat Yesterday's chat went very well. Shadow hung around for about an hour and 45 minutes answering a battery of questions moderated by Mike Beam. I have cleaned up and "synchronized" the chat logs for easier reading.

  • New Release: The February 26th "All Star Gathering of DJ's playing only 45's" (see February 20th News item below) with Cut Chemist at Future Primatives has a representative CD release called "Brainfreeze" according to Shadow during yesterday's chat. Brainfreeze is essentially a "mixtape" based not on the show itself, but of the DAT made of the rehearsal. No word on who will be selling these CD's, but Shadow said that they will be available while supplies last at the live shows this fall of himself and Cut Chemist.

  • Soundtrack Information:The name of the documentary film that Josh has scored is called Dark Days and is about the people who lived in the subways in New York. The soundtrack of the movie will have a new Main Title Theme which will see very limited (1000 copies) release on vinyl. The rest of the soundtrack is edited Endtroducing tracks and some other incidental music. No distributor has been picked for the vinyl release.

  • Solesides Greatest Bumps Update: The upcoming Solesides collection is almost assembled except for some last-minute digging for some tracks that the crew knows exists, but haven't located, yet. More on this as it develops.

  • Tour Merchandise! Shadow said in yesterday's chat that there will be tour T-shirts!

If you have any additions or changes, please send me an e-mail.

  • As you frequent visitors will notice, Endtroducing is in the middle of a redesign. It's been a long time coming. This is the fourth or fifth revamp of the site since its inception in 1997. I've learned quite a bit about HTML since the start.

  • Rolling Stone Magazine, in their latest issue picked Endtroducing as one of the Dance and Pop Essential Recordings of the 90's. "Endtroducing is headphone macrodub with a crafty Californian sense of humor..." Indeed.

    April 11, 1999
  • Well, the DJ Shadow Chat was a success! After some last-minute moderation (the everybody was very anxious to talk to Shadow, but it got very confusing) the Q&A session went without a hitch. Shadow answered a bunch of questions and talked a bit about his many projects coming up. The Q&A went for about an hour and fifteen minutes after which the moderation was dropped and Josh talked to the lingerers for awhile and answered more questions and comments. Here is the transcript

    March 21, 1999
  • Upcoming DJ Shadow Chat Scheduled DJ Shadow is going to do a chat sponsored in part by Endtroducing.com and the InFlux Mailing List. The chat is scheduled for Saturday, April 10th at 12PM, Noon, US Pacific Time. Pacific is GMT-8, I believe for the rest of the world. The IRC Server is underworld.net and the chat channel is #influx. See you there!

  • Mr. Davis is busy: He just recorded a song with DJ Qwest, it's called "Holy Calamity- Bear Witness Part 2." It's not mixed yet, but will likely be mixed by the Automator. He is also working on two (!) film projects and is getting ready to go on the road with Quannum. More details as they arrive. Thanks to DJ Shadow for the news!

    March 7, 1999
  • Tonight on 120 Minutes, MTV will be debuting the "Be There" video! Sources at Mo'Wax US are hoping for a US release of the single-- maybe some MTV exposure will help.

  • Many people have asked where they can get a copy of the Funk Spectrum compilation on BBE, which DJ Shadow put together (See February 11 item below). I have talked to a couple of places that have or will have it for order. Timewarp has it available now, and even has pictures and RealAudio clips. According to folks at Dusty Groove they should carry it, also.

    February 27, 1999
  • I have had the fortune of hearing an amazing mix tape. Normally I wouldn't plug anything from Endtroducing, but any DJ Shadow fan should check this out. The tape is called Off The Record(s) and has two mixes: "Floundering" by Mr. Jeigh is not Shadow-related, but has some really great juxtipositions and transitions (any mix with Jello Biafra is worth note!); the other mix is called "Solecism 91-98" by Aspirin and is a collage of the original samples that Shadow used on pieces like In/Flux, Latyrx, Swan Lake, Entropy, and others. In most cases Aspirin is taking the samples and mixing them in the familiar forms and then varying them. A fun "spot-the-sample" piece. Off the Record(s) is distributed by Neon Wilderness. Worth a listen!

  • Vote Shadow: HMV and Channel 4 in the UK are conducting a vote for the "Music of the Millennium." This is your chance to voice your opinion about Shadow and his work as the best of the Millennium.

  • From the rumor mill: It is possible that last night's show at Club 550 will be the next Future Primatives CD. Let's hope!!

    February 20, 1999

Does anybody know how to order this?

  • I just found out that Polygram US put up a website dedicated to UNKLE. It has audio from the album as well as the Rabbit In Your Headlights video. Unfortunately there was a contest that evidently was over January 5.

Thanks to Daniel from Swankarmy for the update!

    January 14, 1999
  • The new UNKLE single will come as two CD singles or one 12". The track listings are as follows (Thanks to Simon Thorpe for both News items):

    CD1
    1. Be There
    2. Be There (Underdog remix)
    3. Be There (Underdog instrumental)

    CD2

    3. Rabbit In Your Headlights (Video)

    12"
    A. Be There (Underdog remix)
    B. Be There (Underdog instrumental)

  • Additionally, UNKLE is reported to be scheduled to appear live on BBC-1 on January 25th. I can only assume it will be on the Steve Lamacq show. I don't know if Shadow will be part of this or not. It is possible that he will be.

    January 10, 1999
  • The new "Be There" single (see December 10, 1998 news item) will be a 2-part (as is typical of UK singles, it seems). The aforementioned Noel Gallagher remix of "The Drums of Death (The Knock)" will be on the second CD and be called "The Drums of Zep" as it contains Led Zeppelin drum samples. There will be two CD's or one 12". Thanks to Neil Parnell.
